Mecalux introduces a modern collaborative robotic picking system, utilizing advanced AI technology for optimized order picking processes.
Mecalux integrates Siemens’ SIMATIC Robot Pick AI technology, employing deep learning for efficient warehouse picking. AI embedded in the controller enables autonomous, precise order fulfillment by collaborative robots.
This innovative robotic picking system is the result of a strong collaboration between Mecalux and Siemens, who combined their knowledge in industrial automation to efficiently manage logistics difficulties.
Mecalux presents two collaborative picking solutions: a cobot for safe operator co-work and an autonomous system for high-performance pick stations.
From Mecalux’s Barcelona technology center, the picking solution operates continuously, performing 1,000 picks per hour. Versatile cobots cater to diverse sectors seeking optimized order processing.
“The technology partnership with Siemens has allowed us to join forces to create a highly flexible, safe and user-friendly robotic solution that adapts to the specific needs of our clients,” explains Javier Carrillo, CEO of Mecalux.
To prepare the orders, a camera positioned above the cobot’s picking box captures a 3D image of the commodities. “The AI algorithm has been pre-trained with millions of items to offer out- of-the-box performance. It’s able to make decisions in milliseconds on robust, collision-free picking positions for products presented completely arbitrarily. One of the key aspects of this solution is that it doesn’t need to know the 3D model of the item in question beforehand. The advanced artificial intelligence algorithm acts as the brain, enabling the smart picking process,” states José Ramón Castro, CEO of Siemens Digital Industries in Spain.
Following choosing, the cobot carefully arranges items in the picking box, maximizing space use. Mecalux created an algorithm for exact item placement.
Powered by Mecalux’s Easy WMS, the collaborative picking solution adapts its gripping system based on merchandise type. Siemens’ vision system and AI algorithm identify and optimize product handling.
The algorithm operates on Siemens’ powerful S7-1500 PLC and TM-MFP platforms, supporting AI technology while following to cybersecurity rules and leveraging SCALANCE X intelligent switches.
